Racing Without a Heart Rate Monitor

Wahoo tickrs seem to have a very high failure rate. That was my guess as to which ones you had dying on you constantly.

My Garmin HRM-DUAL is going on two years now with regular use for the last 18 months. Never had a problem with it. Minor corrosion on one of the snaps. Nobody sweats more than I do. Anecdotally I would wager most of the dead HRMs mentioned on this forum are Tickrs.

I’ve ruined Wahoo and Garmin HRMs. Arm has been amazing so far!

two tickrs failed on me, they’re crap. the polar OH1 is nice because 1: the strap isn’t integral to the accuracy as long as it’s tight and 2: it charges from usb

I’ve had several Ticks fail. Wahoo is great about replacing them—I have only good things to say about their customer service—but I’ve moved on to polar for now. Only thing about polar is that you have to disconnect the device from the strap or you burn through the battery.

I had the same issue. you’re bound to forget to disconnect it 75% of the time. The amount of batteries I wasted on that piece of crap is mind blowing.

I tried Magene last year, some cheap Amazon brand at one third of the price of Garmin / Polar… The battery easily lasts 6 months under heavy use… It works flawlessly for 1 year now… Since I never had a HRM (multiple garmin’s and polars) that lasted more than 2,5 years… it’s already the best HRM investment I’ve done in 15 years

I have both a Garmin Dual and a Magene. As far as I can determine one is neither better nor worse than the other.

I bought a Polar (H10?) back in 2017 and found the Bluetooth only (no ANT+) pairing was flaky, plus the unit didn’t use the far more common CR2032 batteries.

Later that year I bought a Coospo that does ANT+ aswell and uses CR2032, with heavy use indoors and out it was great for ~5 years, before the strap began to fail. Replaced it with another Coospo (808?), which has been great since. Batteries typically last me at least 6 months.

We just had a race where someone had an HRM but experienced a dropout during the race.

19.2km in and was ultimately kicked by zwift for ā€œnot having a connected HRMā€.

That seems like a really harsh penalty for a hardware failure that has a minimal effect on racing performance and result.

As a result our races are moving to allow those with no HRM and DQ after the race again.

The LIVE option in Zwift Power has a column that shows current Heart Rate. Haven’t checked during a race but might be something to look at. Of course it won’t show what non-Zwift Power users are doing.

This is a zombie thread but,

If the race requires a HRM and it malfunctions, then it is a mechanical.
They happen in every race.
Teams and racers deal with it and take preventative efforts.
People can change HRM batteries proactively.
