What is the likelihood of having more realistic or even augmented reality displays? Could ‘real’ routes be linked to a Google street view type platform?
Last time this was suggested the main arguments against it were:
- it’s a game
- Zwift is about cartoon graphics
- Zwift runs on a potato computer, more realistic colours and lighting wouldn’t (wrong).
I would definitely like newer routes to be more photorealistic and eventually the whole world gets that.
From a company POV you need to think about what devices are mainly used by customers to run the game and how willing they would be to buy a new one in exchange for a better graphics. Right know I don’t it can happen. As for my I was done with MyWhoosh for this particular reason, because the game looks terrible on my 2019 Mac and it doesn’t run even on low settings as smooth as Zwift. And yeah, for that I don’t buy a new laptop when out there they are other platforms, which supports such devices as mine. And that’s only one issue. The other would be development time and coast in return for something. More customers definitely not, a higher subscription would be also not a good idea.

Before coming to zwift I tried Rouvy. I actually prefer Zwift’s cartoony graphics over Rouvy’s hyperrealism, well maybe it’s more like uncanny valley. Cycling indoors is never going to be the same as cycling outdoors so might as well make it phantasy and have weird things and colours to look at
I really struggled with Rouvy‘s animations as they had this weird effect on edges, which was hard for my eyes.
Yes as well as the comically fast or painfully slow other road users.
I really like the colorful, cartoony style. It has something joyful about it.
