Because new messages cover older messages, you very often don’t get a chance to read some messages because they are immediately covered and then vanish before the new message vanishes.
Instead, could you change the order so that new messages appear behind older messages, or don’t have them cover each other at all.
Do you use the Companion app? I find that this helps because the messages are then printed in a chronological and scrollable fashion.

I do use the companion app, but when I’m riding a strenuous ride, which somehow seems to be almost every time 
, I can’t be typing or looking at my phone/tablet.

When i send messages to other riders is there away that makes it easier to know if they have replied back
