Kickr Bike Shift

There is a new firmware available?

End of February version v1.20.12 was released. Mine must have updated automatically.

Im thinking that maybe the ERG mode watts swings I see in Zwift display isn’t a problem. Maybe I am just unused to see it swinging more with the Bike shift than I am used to, vs my Kickr v5 that in Zwift, visually is much more stable around the set power.

Do you have ERG smoothing on or off within the Wahoo App?

I have ERG smoothing ON for both Bike Shift and Kickr v5. Tried with OFF as well, but couldn’t feel/see much difference.
I am going to test ERG with the Wahoo app this evening.

I was watching Ryan Condon YT fitness test video, using his watt bike. I see that his watts also jump alot, very similar to my experience on the Bike Shift. Notice same thing with Shane Miller YT when he tested the Bike Shift.
Must be me who have been too spoiled by my Kickr v5. Unless one have the chance to test both a trainer and a bike, one would never know there is a difference

Maybe it is a flywheel vs magnetic resistance behaviour. When watching Mark Lewis YT do his ramp test on a Kickr Bike, it looks exacly like my Kickr v5. Close to perfect wattage constanly.

I’m going to accept that it is OK

I cannot find the S4Z mod for Kickr bikes. I cannot find it in S4Z and cannot find any place to download it.

Go on the Sauce discord and there is a channel for it - Its probably also on github as a repository if were to search for it.

Probably easier to just jump on the sauce discord and go to the channel for the Kickrgear mod.

Had the Kickr Shift also and big issues with ERG mode and gear shifts in free mode. After a replacement shift which had same issues had to get a refund and go back to trusty elite turbo.
ERG mode- you can’t vary your cadence without some easy start technology kicking in which lowers your watts when you drop cadence and then start to increase cadence, which leaves you in perpetual yo-yo effect and not able to maintain the power target.
Free ride gear shifts - shift up one gear while pedalling and you hit a brick wall for a second or two until the technology eases off and you can pedal again… vice versa shifting into an easier gear where you lose resistance.
Played with every virtual chainring and cassette set up to resolve this but no good.
The firmware or product is not up to scratch… not worth a tenth of the cost.
Wonder if the kickr bike v2 is different.

Hi Simone,
I completely understand your concerns. I’ve used the Kickr Bike Shift for a while, mainly in ERG mode with power smoothing, and I’ve noticed similar issues. Compared to the Wahoo Kickr Core, the resistance does seem to be higher, which can make the pedaling feel excessively hard and lead to quicker fatigue.
The reason for this is the difference in flywheel and braking design. The Kickr Bike Shift lacks the momentum in the pedals that previous models had, which can make the pedaling feel more difficult and less smooth. This can especially be felt in ERG mode, where maintaining steady power output becomes more challenging.
When I reached out to Wahoo support, they acknowledged the situation but explained that due to the mechanical differences, this trainer will never produce power as stable as their previous models. They also mentioned that this issue cannot be resolved through software updates.
Unfortunately, Wahoo did not mention these differences upfront. Long-time users who expect the same standard features and feel from previous models are left disappointed. When approached about this, Wahoo has not offered any solutions or upgrade options. It is crucial for both the company and reviewers to highlight these differences to prevent such disappointments.

So … I ‘think’ I have fixed the spikes in resistance when going up gears.

I changed the connection from Zwift to the Shift from BLUETOOTH to DIRECT CONNECT WIFI… I did this for all connections. That’s it!

Going up a gear seems much more normal, and I think an added benefit is I can check what gear I’m in with the Wahoo App (since I think that uses Bluetooth while Zwift now uses Direct Connect).

Only checked this briefly with a short ride, but need to do more extensive testing.

Confirmed. Switching to Direct Connect wifi has fixed my issue: no more spikes in resistance when changing up gears.

I’m So happy!

I was having problems with my Kickr Bike Shift reporting low wattage and thought it was broken. Turns out that I had accidentally entered an incline mode in the Zwift companion app and somehow adjusted that a bit. After changing the incline value back to normal and touching the button, it reverted back to showing ERG ON - and now everything works again.

Sharing this in case it might help someone else.

HI guys.

Maybe anyone can help me out here.
i changed my Kickr Core Setup to a Kickr Bike Shift a few days ago. i did my first 2 ride & i have an issue.
I can’t keep up & hold the pace for a ride. It feels like, my shift shows around 20 to 40 watt less than before on my kickr core.

A 1hr “easy” roll now feels like i am riding intervalls.
I use direct connect → wifi connect to zwift.

I need help.
Thx
Manuel

Core +/- 2%
Shift +/- 1%

Potentially its as simple as one device is more accurate than the other.

I think @DejanPresen also said that the Core using autocalibration has a tendency to drift, so if you rely on autocalibration and don’t do a manual spindown, over time that might result in a difference like that.

How can i do a manual spindown with the kickr bike shift?!

i know, but the difference is way more than 1% of watts…
its 10 or. 15% difference…

You should probably talk to Wahoo support about your findings. Spindowns for Wahoo equipment should be done in the Wahoo app. I have not used the SHIFT so I’m not sure if it has a manual spindown option, or if you have to use the hidden factory spindown process. If you still have the Core you could do a spindown on that and see if it matches the SHIFT more closely.

Welcome to your new world

The shift will likely be more accurate than the Core.

The shift auto calibrates so no need for spin down etc.

Same as going dumb trainer to wheel on to wheel off - accuracy gets tighter and dreams are broke.

Thx, i made a Ticket at Wahoo Support for this.

ERG Modus on the kickr bike shift is jumping around & that’s not ´normal for me.
ERG Modus is set to 150w & it jumps every seconds from 100, 110 , 200, 180, 160 …
