FTP & New Equipment

I am a 73-year-old male using a Schwinn IC4 for my Zwift platform. It seems to be adequate, but I question the accuracy of my rides and calculating my FTP.
I am considering upgrading to the new Zwift frame and Kicker Core.
What advantages and upgrades will I notice, and is it worth the upgrade? I ride about 4-5 days a week.

If I am correct (and I’m sure someone will correct me if I am not), the Schwinn IC4 is just a ‘spin bike’, which would require the user to manually adjust the resistance. In other words, I don’t think it actually ‘interacts’ with Zwift, even though you can use it to ride in Zwift.

Using the Zwift Ride frame and Kickr Core combination, on the other hand, would allow the trainer to automatically adjust the resistance you feel to the gradient on which you are riding (in SIM mode) without you having to adjust anything. It should also have much more accurate power readings, and a number of other features that are likely not available with the IC4.

In other words, I’m pretty sure it would be a major leap forward in your Zwift experience.

Hi, @Greg_Canales, welcome to Forums! I’m Francisco from Zwift Support.

I believe you’ll enjoy the Zwift Ride paired with the Wahoo trainer, as this equipment is specifically designed to work seamlessly with Zwift and communicate effectively with our protocol. On the other hand, while the Schwinn IC4 is a good option, it is not a smart trainer. This means it does not automatically adjust resistance for hills and tends to produce inaccurate watt readings.

In contrast, the Zwift Ride does adjust resistance automatically, which is much more convenient for navigating both climbs and descents on the route. Overall, it would be a great starting point for you on Zwift.

100% you will have a more accurate, immersive experience. Just know it will feel different at first but there are settings you can use to make the changes in resistance less abrupt, if you feel the hills are a little too intense.
