Exploit found which can lead cheating

Didn’t expect any better. It must be a strange world inside that orange bubble.

I assume, in the name of consistency @shooj you will also be banning the authors of any online content that covers the following?

  • sticky watts
  • routing your dodgy PM power through your kickr v5 to win races at the highest level
  • micro-burst pedalling technique

Ultimately @Luciano_Pollastri_ZE has taken one for the team. This will now get fixed, but let’s get real. If this was reported via any other avenue (and it was, by the way) it would be on the ‘we’ll look at it zoon’ list. Despite the fact that many racers are already taking advantage of it.

How would people report it if they didn’t know it existed? These cheats would just go on using it, and the fact that Zwift can restrospectively go back and identify it, doesn’t mean they are. In fact clearly it is the opposite, or it wouldn’t be being exploited.

The exposure of this exploit is good for the community and ultimately good for zwift.

Unfortunately this is just petty. The guy contributed to the Zwift community but despite that: He certainly intended well. One could argue he should not post it publically. That’s a fair assessment in a nor.al situation but this is an issue regarding Zwift. Zwift which has an amazing community but unfortunately horrible processes in terms of resolving issues (and communicating around them; as everyone is seemingly at risk of being subject to ‘maintenance’). Given the track record of Zwift and his love for the game the action taken by him makes a lof of sense. It is also most likely to yield a result.

No reply of any individual will change outcome on short term unfortunately. So the following will not matter but for me personally I won’t actively promote Zwift to others anymore and try alternatives myself. Love the game, community but not the mess the company behind it is. All these things will snowball and eventually Zwift will feel it. The next MySpace.

Thank you Luciano for your efforts.

Shame on you Zwift.

I love that censorship is described as ‘maintenance’

Oh and it’s World Champs weekend, how do we know the results are going to be ‘correct’, especially in light of the NeXT esports debacle…

In my world of privacy rights, a company can not disclose private conversations between them and a user.

In my world a whistle blower is protected.

In my world bounties are, rightly, paid for highlighted exploits.

This doesnt feel much different to Peloton blaming babies for crawling under the treadmills tbh (corporate behaviour wise that is).

Absolutely agree, I am mad they suspended that account when the issue at hand we have no idea what are they doing on it.
It is frustrating and discourages others from raising issues if they find them

Instead of “maintenance”, how about just disabling the whole edit profile functionality in Companion altogether already and add a notification (like there are for game client updates) telling people to make any modifications in the main app or on the website instead.

“maintenance” in this instance actually refers to the deletion of threads. TBH, I’m surprised we’re still here typing in this one…

No wonder we have been stuck with 50 Levels and 3 Challenges for years now!

Zhq should publicly excuse to @Luciano_Pollastri_ZE and un-ban him quickly .

Many of us are adding #FreeLuciano to our in-game name.

That was a laughable response. Whoever came up with that is so far out of touch with the Zwift community that it’s just sad.

When are Zwift going to learn about proper community engagement? @shooj can I suggest asking @Eddy_Lee for some pointers?

What’s really funny about that is WTRL was in clear breach of the Terms of Service but I don’t think anyone got banned for 30 days. In fact Zwift seemed quite complicit in the whole affair. Seems rules only apply to some people.

5.a.ii. Use or attempt to use another user’s account without authorization from that user and Zwift

I just re-read the article and he practically begs Zwift to immediately fix this exploit.

How they interpret this as some sort of bad intentioned article is beyond me.

Critical mass is a funny thing. This could change pretty quickly if the collective racing community decided to move. I think all it takes is for a well organised weekly league to emerge across all timezones.

Must admit I’ve never seen such a large company act so petulantly. Not even close.

@shooj calls it an exploit. Well, it’s not. It fails the duck test. An expoit is mitigated by the owners of the product. Zwift has known of the performance enhancing feature for nigh on two years and they have done nothing to to prevent its use. Such prevention can include many things for fixing the exploit, to warning users not use it coupled with sanctions with for those who do (and they have admitted they can detect use of this performance enhancing feature).

So, absence of action - any action - over this extended period means that Zwift cannot reasonably now wave the “naughty, naughty” flag when suddenly everyone knows about it. It is way way beyond the usual 90 day responsible disclosure deadline for such things (by about an order of magnitude). Any IT company complaining about public disclosure of alleged exploits after this period is deluded.

And the retribution against the person making the public disclosure is completely disproportionate and counterproductive. Zwift seem furious that their lackadasical attitude to fixing problems (a pattern we’re all very familiar with) has through happenstance embarrassed them before a big eSports shindig. This petulance has, ironically, brought much more attention to the issue and their indifference to cheating on their e-sports platform.

Well done guys - it takes remarkable skill to turn minor disclosure issue into a full-blown PR panic, but you’ve done it. Barbara Streisand would be so proud.
