Epic Races Getting Boring

Well done Zwift - new roads in New York are great. But please can we have some different Epic Races now? It’s getting really boring racing on what are essentially variations of the same route up and down the map.

Thanks!

Epic races are a bit dull anyway.

Few attendees, all cats start together, and as soon as there is a meaningful climb the race splinters into tiny groups or even individuals.

@James_Cavell_Amsterd what about Rule number 5 , that go for online races to and you dont get pulled as well.

I’m thinking about setting up a longer-than-usual race on a Saturday morning US Eastern time (would be early afternoon UK/EU). Do you have any suggestion for route & distance? Do you care if it’s mass start or not?

My inclination is to avoid the really big climbs because that makes field size smaller and breaks up the race too much. Sometimes I get into one of those climbing events and think to myself that I would have more people to chase if I leave the event.

Petit Douleur or Grand Central?

Those are routes that I enjoy but might not do in a mass start event due to the amount of climbing, and to make it say a 90 minute event, that would be a lot of KOMs. Especially in the long mass start events, making them super climby depresses the field size and makes it more likely that everybody is doing a TT. We did a one-time mass start event on Park Perimeter Reverse, 4 laps, that got 200 racers with a lot of finishers at around one hour. I would not call the route really easy when you’re racing against the A+ people, but it’s flat enough that several groups formed.

I’m enjoying doing longer rides at the moment so its nice to get a bit of interest by doing it as a race, so I enjoy them. They tend to be the best support long races on Zwift (outside some of the third-party tour races) and being a fairly low level rider I tend to end up in a good, small group. I agree a few more riders would be good, and you are spot on about the hilly routes. That said, I did enjoy Quatch Quest recently - clearly a glutton for punishment!

London Pretzel?

I have wanted more HC climbs in Estonia around the area of ADZ (the nearby climbs from real life) to allow some proper real life big rides in Zwift and make it something the big sprinters have to really work for if they want to win, ie, they have to try and fatigue the climbers before they reach the hills.

I did Mega Pretzel the other day, it was really boring droning around on the flat, only the hilly parts had any interest.

I understand the majority will vote with their virtual feet against events on routes that are detrimental to their chances of winning.
