I used to only have two sets of chamois which was fine for actual road riding because how often do you actually get out there. Now that I ride zwift almost daily I have about five pairs because I can’t keep up with the laundry and you know you don’t wanna wear the same ones twice.
I’m curious how many pairs of chamois the average person owns. Lol Only include the ones that are actually in rotation. If you have ones you don’t like that you kind of put to the side and don’t use don’t count those.
I have 9 pairs in rotation. Some I just use for short rides. But 5 I use for longer rides over 1 hour.
Zwift is where you use the shorts on which you know the lycra is no longer safe for use in public.
Three on rotation, with a spare one available
6 in use here (Zwift 3-4 times a week).
A couple for indoor use, but I mostly ride outdoors.
4 - I ride Zwift 5-6 days per week.
Yea right. I kinda do my own thing and rolo solo so I dont really keep up with the trends or culture. Last spring I went out in my previous season’s Speedo chamois (3 grams lighter than standard shorts) and boy did I get laffed at. Lesson learned. And with the new longer leg shorts I dont get weird sunburn patterns on my backside as much from riding aero.
I have 2. I usually don’t bother putting them on though, just throw on some gym shorts.
(Note: As listeners of the Pink Tron podcast might remember, I actually had more, but still can’t find that box from when I moved last fall)
shrug
I do. As long as they’ve dried out, I’ve no problem wearing them more than once.
Some of us break a sweat, Daren!
I step out of mine and they walk themselves to the washing machine.
Like I said, as long as they’ve dried out.
Eccrine sweat is mostly just salts and water. It’s not a big deal, and I’ve re-worn bibs multiple times for decades to no ill effect.
But yeah, I have this discussion with my wife all the time. She’ll wear a pullover or dress for one day and then put it in the wash. I’ll wear the same T-shirt and shorts all week sometimes. If it smells OK, it’s good to wear.
a few years back I got indoor specific kit that (a) started that way because of mesh and (b) has space for ice packs… Lockdown was a whole thing
I have 3 on rotation (ride 5 days a week on average), but I’ve used these 3 for the last 3 years, so they are getting a bit worn out.
I’m doing the Volcanic Epic in New Zealand next month (5 day MTB stage race), and decided to purchase their bib shorts as my 4th set, I’ll probably have to retire one of the 3 I have shortly so I’ll probably only be at 4 for a short while.
I use the same bibs for indoor and outdoor, and ride about the same number of days per week throughout the year.
I have 6 pair. 1 for every ride day. 7th day is rest (and laundry) day.
I have over 10 pairs of Giordana Pro shorts (I got some discount buying a few, btw), and I date them when I start using them. This helps me reserve newer ones for longer rides and older ones for shorter rides, while also keeping track of when to retire a pair. Indoors, I train in an artificially low relative humidity (around 30-35%), which keeps sweating minimal and prevents odor. As a result, I can reuse them multiple times in a single training day since they stay completely dry.
Note: Outdoors, I can ride in just about anything and have never experienced any discomfort. However, indoors, I won’t ride unless I’m wearing a high-quality pair of shorts.
What do you mean by multiple times in one day? You’re doing multiple workouts throughout the day?
Yes, exactly…
What kind of workouts are you doing?
It all depends on my training goals and the other sports I do, but generally, I start early in the morning with a 30-40 minute tempo/threshold ride, followed by some HIIT. Later in the day, I include neuromuscular work. On any given year, I average around 15/16 sessions a week, and to be clear, my approach leans toward high intensity, ample recovery, and probably lower volume than most—only about 7,000/8,000 miles a year on the bike. Compared to my cycling and triathlete buddies on Strava, it seems like everyone else is doing more sessions per day and logging significantly more miles. On the bike, I just want to ride more than I drive my truck! LOL
