I believe Kickr Core is compatible with other apps but then what about Zwift Ride controls?
I would like to test Zwift subscription but not interested in a 100% lifetime vendor-lockin.

They only work with Zwift, you could put a real bike and cassette on the kickr core and use it with other apps.

Is changing gears only supported by Zwift?
The Zwift Ride frame will only work with Zwift.
Hi @FFF, I appreciate you reaching out with your question about the Zwift Ride frame! I’m Monica from Zwift. As @Wannie mentioned, the Zwift Ride Smart Frame currently works with our Zwift App because Virtual Shifting is supported only through Bluetooth, not ANT+. Once you have everything set up, the Zwift Ride Smart Frame will connect wirelessly to Zwift via Bluetooth. You can find the connection option in the ‘Controls’ tab. Please remember that your trainer will need to be paired separately to deliver power, smart resistance, and cadence data. For further details, feel free to check out this article.
Will the current frame allow an ANT+ connection, or is it a hardware limitation?
The virtual shifting feature in the trainer depends on Bluetooth to transmit the necessary information to support gear changes. My guess is this is unlikely to change but I don’t have any inside information about that.
