Age Group Podiums and KOM/QOMs

If they did that, is want the option to turn have it turned off by default

Imagine the dejection on reaching a landmark birthday and everyone knowing :sleepy:

Yeah, and why do people need to know how old I am, I’m certainly not interested in how old anyone else is on here

I just finished stage 1 of the tour of Watopia 2023. I’m 73-years-old and would be interested to see where I stand with the rest of my cohort. Just another voice requesting such an option be made available.

It’s not a race, it’s a group ride, so what does it matter where you finished, (I’m a 64 year old, youngster)

I think it’s generally accepted that a reasonable percentage of participants will go “hard” even if they’re not officially racing. IRL sportives often have age categories shown in the results so I guess this request is really just asking for that.

Of course the problem with the likes of ToW is that there are many opportunities to ride each stage so there’s a question of whether all of the results should be amalgamated.

(Also 64 years young)

I agree, 100%. I keep telling myself that. I’m trying my best to beat down the competitor in me, but then I get in the zone, and something changes.

I personally don’t need it in Zwift - in a race Watts are Watts, age doesn’t really matter.

But I found intervals.icu has an interesting information based on estimated FTP):

Not just based on FTP. Choose your duration. :slightly_smiling_face:

True, I am always racing my own ABILITIES and that is watts, strategy, race prep, mind game and pain management. All of those except watts can keep getting better. However, I always have raced against my PEERS as well. As a high school track runner I was the only girl on the team. I usually outran at least one boy, but I wasn’t really racing against my peers, the other 14 year old girls. So I never really knew where I stood. I didn’t know I was qualifying for state meets! And in fact, because that performance was so buried, my coach even didn’t realize it and “forget” to send in my card to reserve a lane. It was going to be my first chance to race with girls. Might also have gotten me a scholarship. But it never happened. I tell that little story to offer a different lens. Racing is kind of the same now, except when I get age-graded results in IRL races. There are rarely 67 year old women anywhere, even my ZRL races. And I often am in men’s races where there might be one or two other women, rarely my age. The science is that men have more wattage capacity, on average, than women of the same age. And we all lose 50% of our capacity between ages 35 and 80. There are no exceptions. Knowing where I am against that curve is enormously helpful and fun. Inspires me to keep going. And that, in turn, inspires other riders, the younger riders.

The big effect/potential is for everyone to stay healthy and active longer. The longer we ride the better our physiology, attitude and cognitive functions to meet the challenges of age.

Would you not agree that it is harmless to you if some older riders wanted to get that data to help their own performance and psyche? Why not let those of us who care about performance relative to our age-determined abilities, have the fun of it?

In 2022 (2023 was cancelled) I was disappointed with my watts and finish time of 1:27 up Mt. Washington. It was so far below my hopes. But then I discovered that I had set a new record for my AG. And in the age-adjusted curve, I finished overall #1 on the mountain. That took nothing away from anyone. It was huge fun for me. But also a lot of younger riders found that inspiring and amazing, resulting in perhaps a broader positive impact.

Lots of tiny steps can make a huge difference.

I have spent a lot less time Zwifting this year than previously as I have started competing in triathlons (sprint-length ones at least). Every time I compete I get a results sheet that shows me my overall position and my position against others the open category and others in my age group.

In spite of my inherent competitiveness, I genuinely don’t care.

In my most recent one (last Sunday) I was 74/98 overall, 55/65 in the open category and 14/15 in my age group (50-59). All irrelevant to me.

The one stat I was interested in was 1:22:00! My overall time, including transitions. 14 seconds faster than my previous best, in spite of this one have a long walk/run from pool to T1 and a 1km longer cycle leg than my previous PB. (Incidentially this is not me blowing my own trumpet … 1:22 is not a particularly fast time for a sprint tri).

Making that age group information available in Zwift. No problem, doesn’t impact on me and if it is useful for others, brilliant … but from my perspective I can kind of see why it might not be that high as priority.

When is Zwift going to add age group racing to the placing….

Hi Steve - DId you see at the top that you can vote for this proposal? Getting more interested riders to jump in here and express their opinion with a vote is key to getting change. Thanks!

Thanks Trish… I voted :ballot_box:

Good for you! But why deny other riders the satisfactions of competing with their peers. The science is that humans lose 50% of their physiological potential between 35 and 80 years old (only 1 point lost 35-40). Staying fit and on the age-curve is a huge accomplishment. Recognition for that will encourage most people. For those who, like you, don’t care, it takes nothing away. Why not use all methods to combat Agism and to encourage people to live longer/healthier lives by staying in the game and having fun?!
Best,
Trish

Thanks Ian. But on Zwift Power Rankings only go to 60+ and are in 10 year groupings from age 23.

Trish
