Add an inline speed skater animation

Love the idea! I am with it 100%! Skate on!

Good idea to identify skaters on zwift. I’ve looked into having a jersey made for skaters for a while.
I think what we would need is a skating team uniform, o a skater jersey, which would make more sense. A skater avatar would be great if we are in fact skating on zwift, but since we are actually cycling, then having a cycling jersey with a skating design would make more sense.
Ride on!

Great idea, Pascal. That would be so nice, having a Skater Avatar.

that would be really great.
But only if I want to choose my avatar… : Pascal Briand (just to be sure to skate well…)

What do you mean again?
Skating is great! :sunglasses::grin:
Let’s make it greater :ice_skate:

let’s make it straight forward first… and we will see corner later^^ but i’m able to manage all animation if needed^^

Es una gran idea!!! A lograrlo!

OK, I am curious, how will the speed of the inline skating avatar be determined. As of right not there is not formula or device that measures power for inline skating so how can speed be calculated?

It should move faster than runners, but slower than bikers, but what is the calculation.

There needs to be a lot more thought in this request before it would ever be implemented.

I think these kind of numbers can be based on a scale factor that is related to the competitive times for the two sports. The aerodynamics of skating is better than biking, the weight is less, but the efficiency of getting power to the ground is lower. Based on that efficiency, I think it will be fairly easy to come up with a basic scale factor for taking bike power and turning it into skating speed. A crude estimate could be based on the hour biking record and the fastest inline marathon. Bart Swings holds the marathon record at 56m49s which comes out to 44.35km/h. The hour biking record (which was in a bit more ideal conditions than the skating record) is 55.1km/h. A ratio of the 2 comes out to roughly 80%. This may not be perfect, but it would be a reasonable starting point.

I’m just surprised that inline skating is still so popular, like we are stuck in 1995 or something

That is a best guess as far as in-game speed goes. I think you need to come up with a formula that can better calculate in-game speed or this will never get off the ground.

Why would you want to pedal on a bike and move an inline skater avatar?

Because we are skaters and we want to be seen as skaters. In my opinion, the formulas used for the biking can be applied to the skating with a scale factor applied to the power produced. The aero and rolling resistance are not hugely different just the efficiency of getting the power to the ground. Also, a heavy pair of skates would still be under 6 lbs.

Those would be huge factors in calculating in-game speed. You would also have to take into account elevation changes which would effect speed differently for an inline skater compared to a biker.

Without a good formula and a baseline of power for inline skating this request will never get off the ground. I am try to assist you in letting you know what would need to be done as far as this requests goes. You will need to come up with a lot more data.

Is there a way to measure power for inline skating. That would be a good starting point. You would also need aero, rolling resistance, how inclines and declines effect speed and many more variables.

You can use this as a guide to get you started: How Does Zwift Determine My Speed?

So far this request is very thin in the details department.
