This could be easily fixed with a little indicator in the “Riders nearby” list or somewhere.
e.g. a big yellow +0.03 to indicate you’re 3 seconds behind the ride leader, or -0.01 to show they’re a second behind you.

That would be so helpful because I’m always asking on Discord where I am which I suspect is a pain for the group.
