I’ve just done a “Zwift TT Club Racing” event. It had the new “Boost” Power-up. Please can this not be used in proper races?
Firstly, in an event which is meant to be a meaningful race, this new “Boost” looks terrible. If I wanted to play a kids game, I’d play MarioKart with my son. By all means, if you want to attract more kids and gamers to Zwift, run special children’s events on Crit courses. You can throw in banana skins if you like! Please, just save the gimmicks for special kids/gamers events and not in real races.
I’ve never been a great fan of power-ups in races at the best of times, but at least the original ones don’t make the races look like MarioKart: and whatever power-ups are used against you, if you’ve got the legs, you can defend against them. To have avatars shooting up the road as if they’ve ignited a jet pack just looks silly…and if you are absolutely burying yourself to get the last watts out of your maxed-out body, the last thing you need to see is a rival disappear like a rocket up the road and not be able to do a thing about it.
I love the Zwift platform: it’s worth every penny of the subscription. But, if you go too far down the “Mariokart” route, I’ll be jumping ship to one of the other platforms. Please don’t sell out to an audience that doesn’t exist. Most people I know on Zwift don’t like this new Power-up, and I don’t think there are many people out there who would join Zwift for the extra gamification elements like this “Boost” power-up. I’d be interested to know what other people think ![]()
