Keto Diet and Cycling and Bonking

This is patently false. Once your body is fat-adapted fat calories provide at least as good an energy source as carbohydrates. And your body can store a lot more fat than carbs.

Yes, fats do supply more fuel but you can’t access that energy in a high intensity effort.
Slow and steady efforts if you’re burning fats .
I’ll leave specifics to physiology experts and experience with highly trained athletes.
I know endurance runs like to use fats.
Cyclists don’t tend to do so .
Maybe a beer thing?

Do ultra distance eat keto diets?
I don’t know.
Is it different for a trained athlete and someone using keto to lose wt?
I don’t know.
My friends that tried keto couldn’t keep up on fast group rides.
I was stating what appeared to be my observations and that is definitely not a scientific study.

Ah, but you CAN access that energy during high-intensity efforts! Maybe not at the outset of going keto, but once you’re fat adapted that really isn’t an issue. I’ve done 100+ mile rides and turned in some of my fastest climb and sprint times not only since going keto, but even on fasted (16+ hours of no calories) rides.

If you don’t mind, how long have you been on a keto diet?
Do you stay in ketosis or switch to low carb?
If these are too personal, just pass.
I don’t have any experience with people who were keto for over 6 months.
I’ve never done it but I do recommend it for wt loss.
I’m in the US and people need anything to help them.

@Nigel_Tufnel I’m not currently counting calories or even doing macros. Instead I’m sort of just focussing on protein. So if that protein comes with fat that’s cool but I’m not going out of my way to get fat intake because I’m hoping that my body fat can like supplement that. It’s my understanding that animals kind of keep wanting to eat until they have consumed sufficient protein so yeah I think I might be in a calorie deficit but if I’m hungry I’ll eat or at worst I’ll wait the last hour or two till my fast finishes and then I’ll eat till I feel satiated.

Yeah learned my lesson with the salt thing once - I get headaches if I don’t get enough salt.

I was always more focused on being low carb to not spike insulin because you maybe don’t burn fat if you have high insulin. But have been pretty un phased about whether or not I’m like in ketosis because the former strategy is enough for weight-loss. But maybe if I actually need the fuel to do something more strenuous than desk work it makes sense to focus on ketones. I’ll go dust off that myfitness pal app and have a look at macros and calories to see what I’m actually doing. I’ve heard protein can mess with ketosis but hopefully thats more applicable to folks who take extra protein shakes.

Thanks for the tips and input

@Tim_Camden_C

While I’ve done keto before and fallen off the bus after xmas holidays; I’ve only been back on track for about a week now though I was semi low carb the week before where I crack at the end of the day and maybe have a slice of mango or something (it takes a while to unlearn the sweet tooth again). Yeah so I always had a ā€œswitch to low carbā€ approach that worked well enough for weight loss as long as you don’t let it derail you. Like if you go to a restaurant with friends you can say no to fries but you’re probably going to have more carbs than you want to.

Anyway it’s never really bothered me living on the low carb cusp and I figured maybe I’m just someone who can switch easily between fuel sources but the most strenuous thing I was doing was walking the dog and climbing stairs. But yeah I think I’ll start tracking macros for a bit to get a better picture because maybe I need a more consistent fuel source to get into cycling.
Thanks

Hi Guys, This forum is excellent and I’m really hoping you can help me . I’ve been doing Keto for 3 months and feel the fittest I’ve ever felt. Mentally and physically. On the first month I couldn’t complete a 15 mile cycle no I’m fully fat dependant I can do a 70 mile cycle with a 18mph avg on no food or just a handful of nuts. My question is this . I’m going to Mallorca cycling and will cover around 500 miles in 5 days . Am I ok just to start eating carbs again on the coffee stops as I’m worried because of the greater distances I might book. Also is it ok to have a few Beers at the end of the day. Or should I start to ween myself back into carbs before I go.

I think you will be fine, you have only been low carb for 90 days. Enjoy the beers and cake!

I bet you also lost some kgs too right, nice work! I’ve done Keto in the past but 7 months ago I tried counting calories instead after gaining a bunch of weight back because I was not following a strict diet anymore. I’ve dropped over 34 pounds (15 kgs) and have been averaging 140 grams of carbs per day, which is still basically ā€œlow carbā€ but not low enough to be ā€œketoā€.

Oh and also have been hitting power PR’s all winter and was just finally upgraded to B on Zwiftpower after being a C cat racer forever.

Awe Mike thanks for replying.thats exactly how much weight I’ve off from NYE. As I started it as part of the hard 75 and then kept it going. I was just worried that I would have some adverse reaction.

You may have some GI stress, but who knows? It wouldnt hurt to test it out at home with a carb drink mix during a ride where you can easily access a toilet just in case

Ha you’re right I’ll give it a go

just be more mindful of your caloric intake when you start eating carbs again, that was my problem and I gained a bunch of weight back. I cut out a lot of dairy and nuts/seeds to help bring the calories down, I still focus on lean meats, vegetables, and proteins.
