I wonder if anyone has ever yelled at me on chat.
I haven’t had it on for years, except for the Eric Min PRL ride.
I keep it on so I know the most irritating time to trigger my own coffee stops.
Uphill - they will accelerate to around 60kph and stay at that speed.
Downhill - they will stop
Hitting a junction will stop them or cause a glitch.
If one rider is soft pedaling and the other isn’t they will split but retain “coffee status”.
I have been testing this through TdZ and have replicated these outcomes consistently.
if I see your coffee-stop against me I’ll coast for a bit to rest and watch your coffee stop end, only to add some irritation in the same manner as you are doing.
But unless folks suddenly start riding on Road to Sky all the time, that’s doubtful to ever happen. That’s the great thing about that route, few riders, no arguments, no trolling.
Have you a video or screenshot? Never saw this in my TdZ rides (and saw many coffee stops uphill…) and there seem to be no bug reports in the forums.
This was from MAAP, but it is probably the most successful. It’s not a consistent speed but it is super glitchy.
It only works if all coffee stopping riders are out of range of non coffee stopping riders. Ideal for bridging up a group or an attack.
I’ve only used coffee stop once to try and change some settings (which I found can’t be done, grrr), but have seen the above behaviour in action when some coffee stop riders zoomed past at lightning speed.
It’s a big group, no telling who the coffee stop is attached to. And frankly in these big groups, I don’t think most people care.
It plays out like this:
TdZ, big group playing racey-race.
Someone will trigger a coffee stop.
Someone will gripe on the chat. Often it involves a normal gripe. Sometimes it involves a gripe with a smiley emoji, like "Coffee? Really? " where they pretend like they aren’t griping but they still are griping.
That’s when I tend to trigger mine.
If you think it’s attached to you and you slow down and you’re right, I don’t much care I like playing racey-race too, but if I’m having fun trolling the coffee stop whingers, I’ll pay the price if it backfires, no big deal.
If any of this was an actual race, I would care, but I wouldn’t be triggering coffee stops or trolling people anyway, because they aren’t allowed in actual races.
Cast your mind back to your post-crash self. Remember how hard it was? For a large proportion of people on TdZ group rides, every ride is a bit like that. There are plenty of people hanging on back there. They’re using the coffee stop for survival, not tactical advantage.
If you’re not fit but you’re determined, every ride is intervals!
I must say that wasn’t my idea, that was someone else, can’t remember who, but definitely not my idea.
The way I think it was intended was that the extra resistance post coffee stop wouldn’t be enough to slow anyone down at normal speeds, but it might impact the high power sprints enough to make coffee stops no use for that purpose.
Just make it optional, so we can all decide for ourself if we want to see the icons or not.
They could also make coffee stop itself optional, so that individual users could decide for themselves if they want to use it or…waitaminute.
Let’s see…
Individual could have option to disable coffee stop option for themselves, and this would also prevent other riders being able to follow them using a coffee stop?
Sometimes the often requested incognito riding mode would be great for those times you just want to ride alone.
Pull the network cable after starting a ride.
Absolute incognito.
Umm, really?
That’s as much as a solution as the suggestions for fixing pace dynamics by having a user doubling their weight.
Surely an option in Companion App could make this a lot easier.
I posted this on one of the other threads someone started in order to complain about the coffee stop function.
May those that ride with us, ride with us;
And those that don’t ride with us, May God turn their wheels;
And if He can’t turn their wheels, May He show a big Coffee Stop icon above them,
So we will know them by their laziness
Personally, I have no issue with someone using Coffee Stop on their own, or on a group ride, but there may be a reaction. I’ve had someone use it next to me on a group ride during a climb. I slowed down, unhitched them, and continued on my way while they stopped. I could only do that because the icon above them told me they were doing that. I’ve seen many a person do it on group rides going up the Petite KOM in France, for example. Okay, show the rest of the group who you are and open yourself up to ridicule; doesn’t hurt me in any way.
I’ve also been on group rides (PRL Full about a year ago, for example) where we talked about it, and agreed that we were all fine if someone wanted to use it to refill a water bottle, use the washroom; whatever. But we also agreed that we wouldn’t use it on the climb. It allowed everyone to take a break if they needed, but without losing the benefits of being with the group.
Do some people abuse it? Of course. Does their use impact me, my ride, or my fitness? Only if I let it make me irritated.
Or … I can use it as motivation to push harder that that person. I know that either I stayed with the group up that hill all on my own, or I know that I gave it everything I had, and just need to keep working to maybe keep up with that group next time. Either way, it’s a win for me.
Start a club, make an event et voila. You can ride alone.
I would love an Incognito mode. So, I think, would a lot of people tired of the oft-spotted bro-ness that can rear its head. Or the people who are straight-up harassed. For me, sometimes I’d just like to ride without announcing to the world that I’m doing it. Sign me up–and you’re right that it would allow people who don’t want coffee stoppers coffee stopping to them to prevent that.
Turn zwift off and stare at the wall. There are no distractions; pure immersion.
And that way, you can designate yourself as a sweeper so if you’re not keeping a good pace you can drop back and help yourself out.
