It’ll be interesting to see where high-level, verified racing on Zwift goes over the next year. Rumor is that the Zwift GP/verified racing is dead and ZADA is no more as contracts ended for people on ZADA.
First to clear up any confusion. All equipment are neutralised for ZGP and WC, with the slight problem that it also neutralises the higher crr of other surfaces, so the Temple KOM saw some times that are impossible to do other wise.
Secondly there are currently only 2 maybe 3 platforms that can pay the required money to host the worlds. We have Zwift and MyWhoosh being the only platforms capable of paying the price as its unlikely that Wahoo that until very recently was close to going under, is willing to spend money on it.
Hosting WC or olympic games are pure marketing from either of the platforms, with the twist that Zwift need to be the host of WC if want’s it goal to be a proper Olympic sport, not the e-sport this year, but proper for 2028. Part of the requirements there are being under an officially sanctioned federeation so UCI, and having events being broadcast in at least 48 or something countries. So you need WC and the agreement with Eurosport/GCN to broadcast it.
On the other hand Zwift seems to be looking at verification a different way as mentioned by Jadon above. Hope they have something in the works, as proper verication is an essential part of trying to make legit events
Clearly nobody else finds them interesting to watch either - the grand prix grand finale from a few months ago has a grand total of 8900 views on youtube. On the other hand, when the elite races were on ZRL courses the day prior to ZRL I watched almost every week.
I think this was done for most recent UCI in Scotland. There was a chance for regular folks to do the three UCI races back to back just like the pros did. Course were the same, only there was no elimination cut from race to race.
Do you mean qualification/exclusion of riders from one race to the following race?
Points races? (There are a few but not very often)
Multiple races? (like the Tiny 4 race events)
Zwift monthly gc events?
Daily series? (Chasing Tour)
I don’t really see what’s lacking.
I do think Zwift has the money, the desire, and the relationships to continue hosting Worlds.
Personally, I think the first race was a bit of a disaster, mostly a sprint finish.
A few racers got caught out mainly because of being inexperienced on the course.
The World’s Qualifying races…that was exciting. At least to me.
As to amateur races, well that was years ago. They weren’t well supported.
But then, they weren’t discussed ahead of time. Just a “by the way, here’s an event.”
If the events were held live on Zwift community streaming, then it would be a true event.
If there was a prize or something of a reward, that would make history.
Also, you have to have a date ahead of time, to train and peak for.
Whoosh? I’ll have to Google that.
Interesting comments everyone. Thanks for weighing in.
Nobody mentioned the red frame?
Elimination races spring immediately to mind.
Points races are not supported on Zwift. Organiser’s separately working things out is not support.
Team races are not supported.
Elimination races are not supported.
No custom courses (start and finish points)
Multi-race formats are not supported
All of these things need to be in-game.
Lets start with something basic
scoring beyond 10 positions and possibly in game display of points accumulated would be nice
I just opened Zwiftpower and there is a banner up the top for link for youtube live streaming of today’s 1910 BST Zwift OG Racing (2 laps Hilly Route).
Is this likely to be just following the A pen?
Elimination races would be nice. But, isn’t that a track thing?
It’s not really road racing.
I admit it looked like fun in worlds qualifying on Crit City
why does Zwift need to be like irl?
I look at Zwift as if its like it’s own cycling discipline so whatever works and is fun which elimination would be.
Zwift is a long way from road racing. Its own discipline.
More common on track but also happens IRL in road crits sometimes.
Not a rumor, I guess!
LOL Reason #5 MyWhoosh gave the UCI more money.
Hi Joakim.
(off topic) I didn’t know that Wahoo was bankrupt… from what I just saw they succeeded in erasing (by a miracle) their debt thanks to new investors (an exchange of debt for shares?) but what is what exactly happened?
Wahoo had very severe liquidity problems that meant it defaulted on payments, and 15 banks actually took ower of Wahoo back in February or march. The actual owner of Wahoo a private equity fund at the same period decided it wasnt going to post more money into Wahoo as that cash would just be debt payment and nothing more.
So Wahoo had 2 months give of take were all only the core part of the company was still operating, meaning that things like sponsorships and so on was stopped. They then managed to raise outside funds to buy back the company in may i think
This is a good summary of what went on with Wahoo:
Alright well…Regarding the lawsuit between Wahho and Zwift, I saw that Wahoo’s request for an injunction against Zwift Hub was rejected by the judge, but the case is not over…Wahoo does not want to let go… .but meanwhile, the Zwift Hub are selling well… .and in the countries of black gold everything is fine
