Zwifting as a Veteran: My Story + Q&A

Hey everyone :waving_hand:
I hope you’re all having a strong ride today! I wanted to introduce myself and share a bit of my journey both as a veteran and as someone who found unexpected motivation through Zwift.

I served in the U.S. Army for 6 years, including time stationed in South Korea, and fitness was always a mandatory part of life. After leaving the service, things changed routines, mindset, priorities, and of course… fitness. I started losing motivation to work out, and traditional training environments didn’t feel the same anymore.

Then I discovered Zwift.

How Zwift Helped Me

Zwift has become far more than just a cycling platform:

  • It gave me structure again, similar to training schedules

  • It created a sense of community, even when riding solo from home

  • It helped me reconnect with my competitive mindset

  • It offered achievable goals, one ride at a time

  • It became a healthy mental outlet, especially during stressful days

I never expected a virtual world to bring back the feeling of teamwork and progress but here I am, riding consistently again and feeling proud of it.

My Current Goals

  • Build endurance and consistency (not chasing podiums… yet! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:)

  • Drop 12Kg and boost my FTP

  • Join or create a casual veteran-friendly group ride

  • Ride at least 100km per week for 6 weeks

Open Q&A

Feel free to ask me anything about:

  • The transition from military fitness → civilian life

  • Motivation, discipline & routine

  • Training mindset

  • Mental health & staying active

  • How Zwift fits into my lifestyle

  • Or just cycling / gear questions in general

And I’d love to hear from other veterans here:
How has Zwift or cycling impacted your life after service?

Let’s Connect

If you’re a veteran, active duty, first responder, or anyone rebuilding fitness habits say hi!
Maybe we can form a weekly group ride or challenge.

Ride On!

Depending on how your current fitness is and how used to being on a bicycle you are (saddle comfort, etc), regular 30km rides on Zwift daily without worrying about competition will be a good start.

Route badges are one way of motivation, there are a lot of those, especially in the New York world with the new additions. Also plenty in Watopia.

As you find those easier, you can build up to longer routes. And when those are okay, then it’s about picking up the pace a bit. The weight loss will happen as you get more active.

Cycling is a great way to keep sanity. I’m not military, but this year had a lot of serious stress. Riding (inside on Zwift) and outside was a great help. Also the other people you meet through riding will keep you honest when the temptation is “I don’t feel like doing this, things are too difficult”, they won’t let you do that. That’s the downward spiral that riding (with friends) helps to avoid.

A few years ago I had a very serious cycling accident that changed my physical abilities permanently. Zwift was part of the recovery for that, and just riding in general (and the people I met through cycling/racing IRL) got me through that when things went bad (recovery stopped, further surgery was on the cards). The worst thing with this was I couldn’t ride, I couldn’t walk (on crutches), no weight bearing on one leg and all the problems that go with that (loss of muscle strength), then having come from cycling at a high level, the loss of the regular routine, the discipline of that and just the nagging thoughts, is this all over now, what happens going forward, do I sell the bikes, because I probably won’t be riding again.

Well, despite setbacks, I eventually did get back to riding and quite well, just not at the level I was at IRL. I can still go on hills, but I’m more cautious on descents and I just don’t attack corners like I used to. I’m not racing anymore so doesn’t matter. As long as I’m staying healthy and enjoying it, that’s all that matters.

Wishing you well on your journey!
