Zwift Academy Road 2020 FAQ

I just finished the first workout. But during the cool down my chain got stuck and I could not finish the cool down, I had 2 min 50 sec left. This should not affect the workout, it should still show as completed, correct?
When I go to the academy dashboard I can see that ride 1 is highlighted, have the purple Z. I guess then it is completed

Hi @Lisa_Egebo
It’ll show as completed if you saved & uploaded your session successfully.

If you were unable to complete the final cool-down block, you might not get stars for just that block, but no big whoop.

It’s on your dashboard when you’re logged in. It should tell you and log in your workouts and rides too.

Hi everyone. This is my first time in this program, glad to join all of you guys in this new experience.
This year have been so null, that we all need some motivation and goals to keep us training.
I already have one workout and one group ride.
I would love to see more guidance about nutrition, what useful metrics to use to monitor your recovery, so you can know how often, or how intense you can do your next training session.
Tips on how to improve your resilience, etc.
If we just get the workouts and some races, I think we are wasting this opportunity to learn from each other, and of course from the coaches that organize this event.
Also why the workouts are structure the way they are, etc. I think we can use more insights.

When are races and segment rides available?

Re the training stats, that’s why Zwift offered everyone a free trial of Today’s Plan. Personally I’m not that technically minded re my training so I use Strava & Garmin stats. Between them they do what you describe re recovery etc. The trouble with Zwift trying to do the same is that they wouldn’t capture what you do out in the real world like Garmin & Strava (and other tools) do.

Nutrition is VERY personal.
There has definitely been some learning from each other on these very pages, I’ve certainly picked up a few things.

Nice. I should be the one that start with some of the things I have learned and for me are useful.

Recovery Metrics:

Rest Heart Rate → This is the metric I use to check how my recovery is for the day. If I see +5 or more from my regular RHT then I know I should take it easy on that day.

Recovery Heart Rate → I like this one too. If you do any intense interval workout, you can check how fast you HR return to your z3, if you see that your HR keep high even though you are on the easy part of the interval then you need to work more on your BASE or you are extremely fatigue from your training.

Tools to improve your recovery.
Make sure you get a good sleep, this is the more important one, try to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep.
Also if you can do a power nap whenever is more convenience to you trough your day It helps too.

Yoga have been really good for me to do after my hard cycling session. Don’t start with an hour of yoga if you are beginner, at least do 15 to 20 minutes and it will help you a lot.

Sauna is also really good if you have access to one.

Full body Massages are all good try to treat your body at least every 15 days.

At 54 not trying for the Pro contract  but wanted to know is there some sort of report for the user at the end of the academy, sort of along the Sufferfests 4DP report, rider type and weakness maybe

I have just completed the sprint profiling workout (W/O 2 for the women)… I am going to be redoing it as this was my first time doing freeride sprints on a turbo. Anyone got any tips on how on earth you reach the low wattages each side of the sprints whilst still hitting required cadences in order to complete the workout?! I have a tacx flux s turbo trainer, and even in my easiest gear I didn’t manage to hit these!

Thanks in advance

I’d forget about the cadences in those sections to be honest. It won’t affect the stars, only power will. For the sections after the sprints I’d leave it in the high gear you used for the free ride, that way you don’t get erg mode trying to adjust too much. Change to the usual gear you use for erg mode in a longer section (or just stay in the higher gear).

Is erg mode engaging and disengaging correctly for everybody on WO2?

I did it last night and it only disengaged (for free-ride spint) twice.

Do I get also credits for group rides which I‘ve done twice or more, e.g. 4 times RGV? Or is it necessary to finish various group rides?

If your mobile device hasn’t auto-updated, please manually update the Zwift Companion app to v3.19 which released several hours ago for both iOS and Android.

Your Zwift Academy progress should be correctly shown in the Academy tab:

My avg pace is 1.4-1.6w/kg

Which group event is best for a weaker rider?

Am I better off doing races so I can ride at my own pace or a group ride (advertised pace 1.7-2.2w/kg) with the hope I can keep pace with the other riders?

I would ride in the 1.7-2.2 group if I was you, make some effort at the start to stay with the group and the draft will help you along.
If you do fall out of the back just continue at your own pace.

Luis, your expectations may be too high. It is great to be in an event attended by large numbers of Zwifters, supported with videos, but, frankly speaking, I was disappointed about the contents of the Academy. Workouts are structured (in my opinion) more as tests for those few who are competing for contracts than as true workouts. There is a lot of wording in the text that appears on the screen that “this interval will tell us about your XYZ capacity”, I do not know who is “US”, but I did not get any information after the workouts, or after completing the Academy, other than what I could extract myself from my power curve. There are no tips on how to train, how to improve, what to eat, how to reduce fatigue. Basically, the only reason to participate in the Academy is to unlock the Canyon bike (which one can also buy in the sweat shop). Everything else, frankly speaking, is already available in Zwift a-la-carte. It turned out to be much less of a useful event than I hoped. I suppose, it still adds to the motivation, which is great, and encourages to try yourself in group workout and races!

However the Today’s Plan ability chart does provide some insight that you wouldn’t get from a power curve. No substitute for a personal trainer, but does suggest where you might need to focus to improve your overall performance.

Hey everyone - how’s your progress coming along? Myself - I missed Workout #3 during the time it was current, so… figured this bit of info might be useful to others too!

How do I complete Zwift Academy if I can’t make the events?
A: If you miss the group workouts, don’t worry. You can go through them at your own pace. Look for the individual structured workouts in the folder called “Zwift Academy 2020.”

When you log in to Zwift, click “Training” and make sure “Workouts” is selected at the top of the next screen.

Scroll down until you see “Zwift Academy 2020” and click it to open the folder. You can do any of these workouts on your own or in a group, as long as you complete all eight. It’s best to do them in order, but you don’t have to. Make it work for you!

Will Segment Ride #1 return to the schedule?

And presumably there is no possibility to add information “in-ride” that would warn people of an upcoming segment, or when they should return to Zone 2, etc. My experience of Ride #2 was that most did not know the “plan” and simply road a normal group ride / informal race. A few of us spread the word about the relevant measured segments. Sure most of us aren’t in the hunt for a pro spot but still…

If you can have messages pop up at pre-definded times in a workout, then why not at a certain distance for each user during a group ride…?

I read a post somewhere else that suggests that there is/was a schedule, something like…

Weeks 3/4 = segment ride #1
Weeks 5/6 = segment ride #2
Weeks 7/8 = mix of 1 & 2

Presumably we’re currently week 6 until ~Wednesday? So ride 1 might reappear in the schedule?

Obviously no indication at all from Zwift themselves so this could just be speculation. Will the races come back or are they finished? Does anyone in Zwift give a monkeys? :man_shrugging:
