I could well be misremembering, but are the number of group Workout rides in the public calendar on the decline? I note that over the next 24 hours, there are only 10 posted workout rides (while for comparison there are about that many group rides over the next 1.5 hrs). Remaining today where I am, there are only 2 workout rides until 5am tomorrow.
Perhaps because there are a lot more banded group rides, in which you can set yourself up to run any workout you want from a head unit?
They just aren’t as popular. You can do a workout at any time and doing it in a group doesn’t offer much more other than the chat.
Whereas group rides give you the chance to push yourself and inevitably have a little race if they’re not with a fence. You can sit in the draft or try and pull the group along. You can have a little sprint or push up a climb etc.. Much more flexibility.
Many people just don’t do workouts much the same as many never race.
Though a workout is basically a banded ride with a structured purpose, and banded group rides are quite on the rise for popularity.
Anyway, it seems to maybe just be a Sunday thing. As mentioned there are only 2 workout rides today, and I don’t see (per Zwifthacks) ANY scheduled for next Sunday (6/7). Though for comparison, there are 22 of them scheduled for tomorrow, and 48 of them on Tuesday!
When rides repeat weekly, the next one is created the day after the current one. So many rides that will happen next Sunday will be on the calendar tomorrow.
One of the main group workout series was managed by ZHQ, and they were purged due to low attendance.
so maybe both (whopping 2 of them) that are on today will get scheduled next Sunday. Still something curious about Sunday IMO and the obvious skip for WKO rides.
If they all gave 2000XP per workout bonus they would be wildly popular, because everyone is in a race to get to level 400 and beyond as fast as possible.
But it would need the XP to be given only at the end of the completion of the event - otherwise people will just go in and do the minimum to get the XP bonus.
Wouldn’t it be better if there was some kind of score for a workout? I know there are ‘stars’ but there is no credit for when you hit a section at 110%. In fact, if you go too hard, you don’t get the star and you don’t get the same amount of xp. (I have never fully understood the system). Group workouts give a random finishing order and ‘podium’. I believe that the finishing order is actually based on the starting line.
