Why are my Cog 1.1 on the Core 2 and Zwift Ride different?

I bought my Wahoo Core 2 with a Cog (orange) and Click in January 2026, and in March 2026 the Zwift Ride for Core 2, which also came with a Cog (orange).
I noticed today that the two Cogs are slightly different when mounted on the freewheel:

The one from the Core 2 has 4 teeth and the one from the Ride has 3, and the freewheel bodies are different lengths. The wide spacers differ by 0.5 mm, and the Core 2 didn’t come with a slim spacer.

It’s more of a luxury problem, but does anyone know the reason behind this? I installed the Zwift Cog from Ride to test it — no difference; the freewheel sounds the same

Thanks for any info…

I believe they updated the Cog a while ago, so you likely have both the original and new version

Thanks @Mike — I was thinking the same thing, about saving money

Another possibility: The “standalone” Core 2 — without a Zwift Ride — can be converted to a cassette for other bikes, so the freewheel is different, for example, for HG. The Zwift Ride with Core 2 works not with a cassette. Maybe, that’s why the freewheel is different…

More pawls means more distribution of load to each one and less likelihood of breaking a pawl. Also keep in mind that this freehub is designed to fit a lot of different trainers so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see changes that improve its fit on some trainer that you don’t own.

Thanks, @Paul—that’s a good point: the load is distributed four pawls better.

I happened to find this on Wahoo:

That should be the freewheel from my Core 2 Cog.

Oh got it, that four-pawl one came with the trainer, it’s the Wahoo freehub. The other one is the Zwift “multi-trainer” freehub designed to fit a bunch of different trainers including Wahoo.

You can always take the Cog off and install it on whichever freehub you want. Assembling Your Zwift Cog

Thanks, @paul—I’ve realized that now, too. There’s the Wahoo freewheel with a Cog, which comes with a Wahoo Core 2, and the Zwift Multi-Freewheel Cog for the Zwift Ride, designed for various trainers, with some differences. I can’t say whether the Zwift freewheel also fits other cassettes, but it doesn’t matter to me.
