Does the diameter of the wheel matter in calculating speed? I ride on 26" wheels so my speed sensor (that only measures rpm) is probably showing me at a higher speed than someone on 700cc wheels?
Yup. We currently only support 700 sized wheels. 26" will increase speed but not by a very large margin.
