What's the point of the Rookie Rides if it's treated like a race?

Keep doing the rides and it will get easier in time. I remember many of my initial D rides and I’d get dropped quick… then I could hang for 40 minutes, then finally I can last. Leadership and fences help keep everyone honest and in the draft. and Zwifthacks help find a range of D rides for me depending on how the legs feel.
