Unpairing on escalators

I’ve searched but can’t find anyone else reporting this issue.

I’ve now done a few races on circuits that feature escalators.

Everytime I hit one, no matter what I do, my Stages SB20 bike unpairs, and I roll slowly to the top. Waiting to repair and change into a sensible gear.

is this a bug anyone knows how to fix?

I haven’t heard of this before. What are the specs of the device you are running Zwift on? My wife uses an SB20 and has not experienced this on the NY routes. She uses an M3 MacBook Air to run the game.

I’m using the SB20 with an iPad and also the iPhone at the same time. No issues on anything for years and now this issue

You mean you are running Zwift on the iPad and Companion on the iPhone? Which model iPad are you running the game on?

I wonder if it’s something in the hardware (a fault) that doesn’t like the slope. Have you tried going up a 19% slope on a different course to see if the same thing happens? Or perhaps it’s not just the gradient itself, but the sudden change from 0% to 19%?

Either way, it sounds like an issue with your SB20, sorry.

Hi… I was hoping someone might have an easy explanation. It doesn’t look like it after first replies. So yes I’ll go digging deeper now and see if I can replicate it elsewhere or do anything to avoid the “unpair”.

Yes zwift on iPad and companion on phone. I’ll check model and report back.

You also might like to try pointing a fan at your trainer to see if that helps, in case it’s something like your SB20 overheating when it hits that high gradient.

Have you tried contacting Zwift support?

Not a bad idea, but it can’t be that. It happened in a recent race less then 2 miles in on a cold day in my garden room with the fan pointing at it. It’s not happened in mid summer, bigger watts deep into a crit. I’ll keep investigating

When running Zwift on an iPad, it is recommended to force-close the app after each use to avoid gradual depletion of system resources which can cause various problems. The available resources are also constrained by the hardware in the tablet such as how much memory is installed and which CPU it has (determined by the model of iPad you have). I don’t know if this is the reason for your lost connection but it’s something to consider.

The SB20 can be paired for power either to the bike (which bridges the connection from the power meters) or power/cadence can be paired to the left crank arm which transmits power for both crank arms, so you could try both options. Resistance can only be paired to the bike since the power meters do not provide resistance. So if you pair to the left crank arm for power and to the bike for resistance, and you get a disconnection event, what happens will depend on what got disconnected. If it’s only the bike that disconnects, you will lose resistance but not power. If it’s the crank arm that disconnects, you will lose power but not resistance. If both disconnect then you lose power and resistance. These outcomes should be visible on the pairing screen. If you’re paired to the crank arm for power and the bike for resistance and everything disconnects, then I would start to suspect something happened on the iPad.

I had kind of a similar issue with the Zwift Academy assessment ride a few years ago - it was Erg mode until the segment, where you were supposed to do your max for the sprint, short climb & long climb.

My Kickr Core dropped to zero resistance every time I tried to do the ride. I got the trainer replaced, though that event was over by the time I got the replacement so never got to do a 1 for 1 comparison on it. I had gradually had more and more trouble with disconnections on the trainer over time. I think the radio was marginal in it, and the hard change from the Erg to a gradient seemed to break it.

YouTube Video of not the first time this happened

I had a serious drop out on the Unlocked tour escalator. I was almost at the top so I was able to continue once the game reconnected. SB20, Mac mini M4 w/companion app on iPad Air, Favero Assioma pedals connected as power and cadence.
