[tip] MagSafe mount for an indoor bicycle

It turns out quite a lot of people use a separate bike for indoor riding.

For example, using a Wahoo KICKR Bike or a cheaper bike with smart trainer.

Here’s a tip for those users. This method is not suitable for outdoor use.

(Obviously,) there’s no need to keep your phone in your back pocket while you’re indoors. You can just place it somewhere within easy reach like this.

But when you’re checking messages or using something like Zwift Companion, it can get a bit annoying having to look back and forth between the screen and your phone.

So you start thinking about ways to mount your phone on the handlebar or stem.

A simple option would be to use a clamp-style or rubber-band mount,
but indoors there’s no real need for such a firm grip—and more importantly, they’re just not very aesthetically pleasing.

MagSafe

Simple, clean, and with just the right amount of hold for indoor use.

So I started digging through AliExpress again.

First, you’ll need parts like the ones shown above. It would be nice if they were sold as a bundle, but you usually have to buy them separately.

You can roughly search for terms like “stem ball head” or “MagSafe ball head” to find them.

Once assembled, it looks like this.

If you want easier angle adjustment, you can mount it on top of the stem—but for a cleaner look, mounting it underneath is definitely better.

And this is how it turns out.

It makes it easy to check your messages and also convenient to use apps like Zwift Companion.

You could even use your phone like a speedometer, and it might be fun to press Ctrl+H to hide all the on-screen data as well.

It’s also great for watching videos in landscape mode.

If you use the same bike for both indoor and outdoor riding, there are also products like this that can be mounted onto your existing bike computer mount.

You can search for “bike MagSafe indoor” to find them.

As a secondary; since I had been riding some outdoors on a Tacx until pollen season came around, and needed a way to mount my phone.

Someone does indeed make a clamping phone Garmin mount.
Would I use this outdoors? probably not, even with my lightweight iPhone12s.
But with a 90 degree power cord adapter, it works well!

My iPhones have QuadLock cases, so I got a quad-lock adapter for a bicycle stem, this works very neatly on the Kickr Bike. The Kickr Bike also has a Garmin mount.

I have the QuadLock chargers for them as well, but those are desk based. Those cases have proved really good at protecting the phones as well it must be said.

I am happy with QuadLock since 8 years, but the last price increase on April 1st was heavy. No joke

looks like you a have an expensive sweat protector for you bikes stem.

Joke really but if i was to want my phone out front i would want it further away from the bars and probably angled up and towards me to try avoid the sweat issue

That’s true, but when the Garmin is already there, there is only so much space and room to put things.

I do sweat a bit (I’m doing difficult riding in Zwift) but the phone is far enough forward that it misses the phone. Only sweat is coming from my hands. Now that winter is approaching that won’t be as much a problem.

I appreciate the low-cost aspect of the OP’s approach. Hi @YunWoo welcome back and thanks for your contribution! There are many variations on the ball-mount attachments, it’s worth spending time to look into those.

The Quadlock case + clamp approach is popular in the mountain bike world for a reason. They’re secure way to ride with your phone outdoors.

Another (pricy but slick) option that I’m a fan of is Peak Design. They make a system of phone cases that attach magnetically to the bar mount + physically locks metal-on-metal. It does not rely on a quarter-turn plastic mechanism that wear over time. I’ve lost a head unit that untwisted on a mountain bike ride. Is this overkill for riding indoors? Absolutely. But if your bike is also ridden outdoors and you want to keep that phone handy, it’s worth considering Peak Design.

My old physio had one for his motorbike. He reckoned it worked great.

They are good, solid cases. Maybe not the most stylish but they protect the phone well.

However I don’t use this for riding outside, I still don’t trust clamping a mega-$$$ iPhone 17 Pro Max to a stem on a bicycle, too much risk. A Garmin Edge is cheaper, less of a risk and better/purpose designed to withstand any potential disasters. Longer battery life as well.
