I’m currently in pace group D. I weigh in on about 97 kg and my FTP is now 229 w. Is pace group simply a result of dividing FTP with weight? 229÷97 roughly equals 2,36 w/kg. The only way to go is either to or both…
Pace Group is determined by W/kg of either your zFTP (not FTP!) or zMAP values. You can find the Watts for those variables in the Fitness section of your profile on my.zwift.com. Then you divide by your weight, but not just your current weight (unless it has remained constant). It uses the average of the weights you were at the time you set your 3, 5, 12, and 20 minute PRs in the last 90 days. Then you compare those W/kg numbers to the chart on this page:

A rider at that weight who is in the middle of the bell curve for power will quite likely be in D. There are many legit riders above that level, but D would be a perfectly normal place to find them.
Correct, this is where Zwift needs to be running some AI and looking at the bell curve. It has enough riders of exactly the same age and weight to start doing comparisons and it knows what power source you are using. Sure there will be some outliers but statistics don’t lie.
Prove what? Again, the OP for sure is D cat with their power and weight, no arguments there. But there are many folks who have accurate power, are not doping etc, both older and younger who are well above D category power.
Maybe I’m not understanding the statement. Either way yes, OP would be D cat.
You can make your way to C, no doubt. In am 66 now, 187 cm and 91.5 - 92 kg, never cheating, riding indoor in winter only. This winter is the first one I stay in D - after 5 years of starting in D and coming to (bottom) C later.
