Network / Application Status Indicator

Would really be nice if there was a network status indicator on the home page of the website or somewhere.

It would have saved me and hundreds of others a lot of time tonight.  No I don’t use twitter as is probably the case with many others so something on the website would be nice. 

Even if I did use twitter I’d have to follow all 5 accounts?  Go through all the tweets to find the one about status if I missed it when it went out?  Just wrong tool for the job a status indicator would be much easier.
