Insane crowds near KOM banners

With all of the annual controversy the TDF brings on fans interfering on climbs, what if zwift implemented a crowd feature where massive amounts of fans (NPCs) crowded the road near the top of climbs? Make them run with me, wave flags, throw flares, all of it

might be hard to implement them spreading apart when you get there, but would be awesome to have that motivation (with crowd noise of course) during races and such.

Sorry if a thread exists on this already.

What about an “Allez Opi Omi” person near the finish of events or races?

Edit: Damn, people even sell shirts and jackets with that sign on them.

How’s about a pre-banner spinner 250m out that gives you anything from an EPO-like boost, Didi morale boost, through puncture with added resistance, a mis-shift delay, to dead stop from an errant spectator (grab, fall, bag strap, photographer)? :chequered_flag: :big_z:

Even just a crowd on/off would be nice for group ride leaders.

Besides my dislike for no night in France, I don’t love the huge crowds either.

It’s fun in races etc. but silly when you see it all the time. Same with Scotland.

Rally and other racing games have had spectators jump out of the way since the 90s; it can be done easily.

Were those rally games multiplayer online games in the 90s?

I remember them being very basic. I think we still had dial up internet. Every website worth its salt had an animated GIF welcome screen with a click here!

First advanced sim I can remember was that unreleased World Sports Cars race sim. Looked amazing for the time, tech and physics was supposed to be super advanced. Think the devs were Tony and Chris West.

It was still basic compared to these days.

There are already some crowds on the Alpe at the moment, IMO that is enough. Maybe more crowds and the errant spectator with a selfie stick or Allez Opi Omi person bringing down the group in a sprint finish of a race might help to Make Racing More Exciting™ but I’m not so sure.

People want accurate crowds and inaccurate trainers.

holy crap RSC is still kicking around?!

Pretty sure Zwift handles crowds via LODs in some fashion right now anyways; see the easy ones in NYC and Richmond where spectators slide around until you get within ~50ft and then they start to actually get a walking animation.
Same can be done.

Grand scheme of things it isn’t complicated.

But the actual point is, a setting to enable bigger to smaller crowds to maybe none, would be a nice future choice for clubs and event leaders.

Or imagine a future in Zwift where crowd sizes are dynamic; nearing the end of the race event and the crowds at the final km are double in size than they were at the start.

With some added random drunken behaviour, potentially slowing riders down (opposite of a power-up)? :winking_face_with_tongue:

In races it could be luck of the draw. Might allow the pack to catch back a breakaway. Making racing more exciting.

Or you have “Allez Opi Omi” bringing down a group and mixing up the results. Might make riders further back in the race stick around until the finish just in case (rather than rage quitting) - improving the “social experience”.

Not needed for normal riding, as crowds don’t care about people riding normally - they are only interested in races.
