Individual Workouts in Group Rides

Hello! I would like to make a suggestion that would make Zwift much more user-friendly for large groups like cycling clubs.

Currently, for users to be banded together but to do their own workouts, the ride has to be arranged as a “Meetup” which would require the organizer to send invitations to every single club member. For a large club, this is difficult, and does not allow for new users to hop on without a specific invitation. Currently, our club sets up Group Rides, which allows anyone in the club to join, but these require everyone do the same workout or free-ride only. We have a lot of racing athletes on different plans, and so some users are choosing not to ride with us because they cannot do their own workout.

A solution would be to either add a link to Meetups that anyone can join from, or to add the individual workout option to a Group Ride.

I am having a great time using Zwift, and I hope this capability will be put under consideration!

Hi @Rachel_Schmidt, welcome to the Forums! I’m Francisco from Zwift Support.

It’s the kind of feedback developers appreciate because it sheds light on the challenges larger clubs face. Thanks for laying out your experience so clearly and insights.

Ride On.

Are saying that you want the riders to be banded together, even though the individual riders would be doing different workouts, with potentially wildly different power outputs and different interval lengths? That sounds like it would be exceptionally frustrating to many riders.

Yes - we’re a social club full of varying abilities, and that’s basically how our rides are now; we’ll have one person putting out >3 W/kg while another tags along at 1.2. No one really cares about “distance” covered, just average watts.

Thanks, Francisco!! :slightly_smiling_face:

Sounds like a great feature. It’s been requested many times already.

It’s a great idea and might as well extend to ability to do this during any calendared Zwift banded group ride.

So would the basic concept be that the entire group just moves along at some constant predetermined speed, since everyone in the group would just be doing their own workout at their own FTP level? Or would the group move at some average speed based on the power each person is putting out at that particular moment?

Probably the latter. I think basically it’d be the same as any group WKO ride on Zwift now – what speed does the blob move at, and based on what?

If banding is enabled, then sure, make speed work like a banded ride. This is how most group workouts function. If banding is not enabled then each rider’s speed is determined by their own power. Occasionally group workouts are set up that way but not very often. I would just let people run the workout of their choice during any kind of group ride event, banded or not. That should include custom workouts as well.
