Garmin buys Trainer Peaks

Just got a note from DC Rainmaker about this. I’m sure Shane will discuss this as well.

I was curious what Zwifters think of this. I hope to publish some numbers tomorrow about this.

TrainingPeaks not TrainerRoad!

This is the official announcement:

I hope it isn’t just a case of buy a rival, then kill it off over time to get rid of it.

I am a long time user from 2014. I have preferred it because it isn’t trying to be a social media platform, it is just metrics that I want to see. I know there is TrainingPeaks Virtual, but my primary interest is the logging of data and recording of my training.

If you are a user, you would have got an email about it.

Potato Patoto lol, is not a complete sentence?

TrainingPeaks has been half-dead for years. Coaches stuck to the platform and requiring their athletes to use it seems like the only thing keeping it alive. I’m not surprised that someone bought it. Any individual looking for analytics should not be considering TrainingPeaks in 2026. It’s one of those apps that you might use if forced to do so.

What should they be using, in your opinion?

And for what reasons?

I have had so many half cooked applications before TrainingPeaks, when a coach got me over to TP it just worked, especially the phone app. No gimmicks, no kudos, no social media - just what it needs to do.

intervals.icu is the best match for TrainingPeaks features. Development is rapid. The free version is highly usable and the paid version costs very little. It is not a social app. If you tried it in the past, I would take another look and see how they’ve progressed. It also offers a Zwift integration (initiated on your intervals.icu profile) and can push workouts to Zwift if you want.

Suggestions are that Garmin might try to do something with TrainingPeaks Virtual - maybe its own trainer app might go bye-bye. TPV is pretty sophisticated already.

The TPV people seem to think they’ll be able to do more and faster with their platform.

It does need a graphics redo. It didn’t look great on my M4 Pro Mac Mini and the performance was a bit sluggish as well when you turned up the details.

It has better realism in its ride and race choices. The draft seems more natural as well as pack dynamics. The slowing in turns seems odd at first but becomes more natural after riding for some time. I tested it and what I didn’t like was that it is the worst of the four main virtual training apps in appearance as well as a very small world. Perhaps Garmin will address these points, I don’t know. It loads super fast.

Online sources list Training peaks at 250,000 subs. Rouvy at 300,000. MyWhoosh at 100,000 (seems very low estimate) and 1,000,000 for Zwift (active within a year, not a monthly average).

I’m sure other sources may publish wildly different numbers.

So, Intervals and Training Peaks both stink?

No I like intervals.icu, and I don’t have a coach who uses TrainingPeaks. I also don’t know what a coach would prefer to use.
