Fixed Trainer Difficulty for Races

I’d like to see an event setting for racing that enables the fixing of trainer difficulty for all riders, so all racers are set to same diffulty for that race.

I realise this may only be applicable to smart trainers, but it would add a new element to climbing courses where the organiser chooses to use it. Similar to races where riders get an allocated bike to even the field.

Organizers can request a minimum percentage for Trainer Difficulty from the events team. Of course this does not result in the same experience on all trainers since their capabilities vary.

This is good to hear but as an event organizer for many years I’m not aware of it, so many others may not. This is probably why nobody is using it.

In the events settings page we only see:

  • Show Race Results
  • Allow Late Join
  • Steering Mode
  • Fence Mode
  • Disable Drafting
  • Enable Double Draft
  • Women Only
  • Rubberbanding

It sounds like there are many other event settings that I would like to be part of the self-event-management page. Self event management was a great addition to Zwift but has many missing config options … the ability to change more event settings would help organisers manage events, and make them more interesting, which in turn leads to a better Zwift experience for everyone.

In addition self management would allow event managers to change settings during hours when support isn’t available, eg. sometimes I need to cancel a Monday event at late notice, this is not possible over the weekend, which then runs the risk of having an event with no leader because ‘suspending’ or cancelling one occurance of an event isn’t user manageable.

It’s job security. If they give you the tools then why do they need to be employed? Better to make all the event organizers suffer so a few people can have a job.

Oh for sure, many event managers want more access to settings, and the events team is well aware of that. I have been in direct discussions with them where these issues were raised. I think they want those things too, but the company has not put the effort into it yet.

The most recently added change to the feature set was ability to adjust event times when the clocks change, so that’s a nice tiny bit of progress. If you want to hear about those things I recommend joining the Zwift Team Managers group on Facebook. The events team mostly avoids the forum.

I don’t think this is fair to the events team. They don’t create those tools. They have to rely on engineering leadership to put some priority on it. I would love to see them able to focus on higher value work. It would be better for everyone.

I agree, this is a bit harsh, a tad funny, but harsh.

I just feel the quality of events and social engagement on Zwift is it’s biggest strength. Therefore giving event organisers more tools should lead to better events management and variability.

I guess my post therefore is more about improving/extending the self-managed event settings. Now I know trainer difficulty is there in the background.

Perhaps if zwift could identify all Zwifters who manage events, then send out a wishlist questionnaire of settings that are available but currently not yet ‘self manageable’. An options to choose/prioritise which features you’d want access to change’ Then the results of this may allow them to prioritise future enhancements.
