Fancy That

Well I’ve just finished my last ride on Zwift, subscription ended today & it’s not good enough to renew at that price. I was surprised to find on my last day you can only do one ride, after that if you try to do another you just get directed to the subscription page. I thought it would last all of the last day but there you go, don’t even know why I’m surprised.

It depends on what you like on these indoor apps, I don’t like avatars or any of that palaver so I’m off back to FulGaz more than likely. Just a real road to look at, no dodgy animals or cyclists all over the place etc so I can’t say I’ll miss it.

I expect it was just a time zone thing on exactly when your subscription ended, not that you’re restricted to one ride. I think they use UTC for subscription date.

I could have sworn that not many months ago, if you began a sub at say 1400 BST, your sub would end at 1400 BST.
Now it appears to end at one minute past midnight.

And before you could finish the ride you were on, now your avatar stops immediately at one minute past midnight.

I’m intrigued what’s changed for you?

You’ve been a user since August 2022 and are level 75.

The game itself hasn’t changed much in that time. You ride most days and often several times a day.

You seem to like the achievements in terms of routes etc…a bit of a badge and kit collector.

Is it the lack of available badges within your capabilities that’s turned you away more than anything?
I’ve only 3hr plus routes left to achieve and am finding myself lacking in motivation to ride these whereas more sub 2hr routes would be great.

I have not been on any other platform in a while (~3 years) but as pretty as Fulgaz is…an inordinate number of rides I did had too much stuttering and stopping at red lights. Not very seamless. Personally I liked Rouvy and BigRingVR more.

I used to do the monthly rides on occasion when I started using the app, mainly to see if I could get away with it. I was never that bothered tbh so didn’t commit. Last year I was offered 3 months free through my adidas app & as it coincided with my FulGaz subs ending I took it up. Then as a birthday present my wife bought me a years subscription, didn’t have the heart to tell her I wasn’t going to bother with it so I’ve used it ever since.

I’ve used it primarily as a training tool & found some of the challenges good for that, and of course you get caught up in ticking off rides & equipment. The worst part for me is the blatant cheating in racing & the obvious misuse of coffee stops, using one out of the pen when doing a flat ride for 1 hr is laughable.

On the plus side the app has never had a single problem for me, once I found out you can’t have it on two things at once. That said it’s obvious that some people have a terrible time with it as seen on the forums every day. The ownership seems to be pretty much hands off for every problem that comes up, only interested in taking in cash while offering little in the way of family or group subs or a pause subs option for injured riders.

I’m a solitary person in life & riding so I don’t interact during rides at all, all comments are off, all setups have no sound. I don’t enjoy all the people around me so going back to FulGaz is ideal. I also never had a problem with that set up for the 2 years I had it.

Sounds like what is needed is the incognito riding mode - a lot of folks want that for various reasons, privacy, safety from stalking, etc or just simply want a quiet ride left alone.

This shouldn’t be something that is exceptional or unusual and people shouldn’t be considered different for wanting it.

There are always going to be these things in various platforms. Fulgaz had it quite bad with laughable segment times for a while. At least with it you could just filter that out to a degree.

I hope some other platform delivers the joy you are missing

For me there is nothing better, if unable to get out on the road, than doing an Ironman 70.3 ride around real roads all over the planet. Only a HUD to look at, no avatar, no bike, no kit, no creatures.

And well done to you btw, you’re always one of the first to offer help to anyone on here with a problem, and you helped me a couple of times when I’ve asked a question, so thanks again.

I was a Fulgaz user until the whole unfortunate takeover when I killed off my account.

Some of the routes in there are very, very well recorded. Col du Telegraphe I did a lot to learn it before riding the real thing, when I got on the real road it was as I expected, only with the exception of the mother and father of all traffic jams and the stinking scorching heat. Already hot and every motor vehicle had the AC cranked up, so hotter anything. Col d’Agnel too was right on with the real thing.

Some of the others were also really good. It’s surprisingly nice way to escape to places you’ve ridden overseas before. It’s still not fully real but it’s nice to remember things.

I live in Newcastle & they have a couple of longish rides near, it’s quite surreal riding roads you know well while sat in the garage.

I’ll not be buying any apps over the summer as I’ve just got a new road bike, Felt AR5, so I’m going to be giving that some kilometres before the weather turns again.
