Events are not true distances

Why is it that if I chose to run an “event’, for example, a 5k or 3.1 mile run, the distance is more than 3.1 miles? Even though my avatar moves, the distance marker at top of screen doesn’t actually start moving until after 0.3 miles- but if I choose to run at random, the marker moves immediately.
Is this a known issue and is awaiting a fix? I’m using a smart treadmill, Life Fitness. T5 Track Connect.
Thank you
Alan

I’m not positive on this, but I think it’s because when ‘free running’ you spawn right on the course you picked, but when doing an event you start in the ’pens’ and are not actually on the course for a bit. I see this regularly in the cycling events, where the mileage countdown often indicates ‘Lead In’ if the ride is not yet on the course. Sometimes the lead in is short, and sometimes it is several miles.

Marking this as resolved since you got the answer here and on the Zwift Runners Group on Facebook.
