@Daren an OG Zwifter! It’s great to hear from you. I was thinking that nearly everyone was left Zwift for lower cost options and real virtual roads elsewhere. Phew…there are a few of us left.
I totally agree. No helmets - a choice of caps and handle bars that are correct to scale
I presume the bars are stupidly wide because that model is one size fits all (mountain bike, Buffalo, BMX, Brompton etc.). There are clearly variations of rider model though, so it doesn’t seem like it would be a huge deal to tweak a rig for specific bikes.
I’m not a 3d animator though, so it might well be a bigger deal than I appreciate.
I suspect you are correct, they probably have a set of assets, positions and animations all tied to a certain bar width for a certain avatar size, and adding many variations on that might be more work. They put a bunch of work in to make it work for MTB a while back, and now copy/paste.
The Brompton race was a total fail in my opinion. Brompton races are supposed to start with unfolding the bike - totally missed. And the virtual shifting should have been changed to 6-speed hub emulation - 3 speeds and double-click to switch between high or low.
I think they should have a separate “idle” animation for a brompton rider where, once stopped, they pack up their bike and sit there until they start pedaling, then they quickly unpack the bike and get going
It’d be cute, sure, and I’d dig it. But a huge amount of effort for something that would have zero impact on the race; unlike an actual Brompton Le Mans-style start.
Maybe if they synced the unfolding animation to pedalling at exactly 100W. That would introduce an element of skill and control, and riders wouldn’t be able to put the hammer down until they’re fully unfolded.
I can’t offer a view on this, because my Saris H3 decided to go to turbo heaven the other day (new power supply didn’t solve issue, cannot see bootloader in Saris app to reinstall firmware), so I’m riding on my treacle flywheel DIreto again while considering options, but…
Is the poor aero of the Zwift Brompton giving better races?
Hold on - I get the unfolding IRL, however, in 2016 we were promised rowing. Never expect anything but incremental on Zwift.
Owning a 3 speed,
I was wondering this myself. In fact, the whole speed was incredible. My 32km loop at home and my IRL aero bike is 20 faster than my Brompton for roughly the same effort.
I don’t think they’re that much slower. I have a BWR (6-spd) admittedly, but when I did the 2012 Great Manchester Cycle on it, I averaged 27kph for the 40km/25 miles. I don’t think I’d have been that much faster on my road bike.
Admittedly, my HR was 171 average and peaked at 181, so maybe I was trying hard.
