Does anyone have any easy workaround to get a smart trainer to release any resistance to make it easier to pedal by hand, while adjusting rear derailleur indexing across the cassette’s gears?
Unplug it from the power?
do you have a garmin head unit that can control the trainer? if so just set the resistance to the lowest limit
failing that use the trainer’s app which should be able to do the same
weirdly my elite trainer is really hard to pedal when not switched on so might not always be the case
Yeah, I have an Elite trainer too. I think it’s actually a marketed selling point in that you can use the trainer while it’s unplugged.
The elite trainer app also isn’t free if you want ability to set power targets.
could turn erg mode off in a zwift workout then just reduce the resistance as low as it goes?
then just discard the activity when you’re done
log into zwift, join your friend at the top of the Alpe and …
Elite recently released a new feature in the MyETraining app where you can set resistance in the app and then maintain that resistance when the trainer is powered off.
So you should be able to use that to set the resistance to zero.
Let me find the link …
All the kewl kids are doing it!
I used to connect with the trainer’s own app (or PerfPRO studio for instance) and set gradient to something negative like -5% which makes it easier to do the indexing of gears.
This was with a Tacx neo trainer.
Luckily I have a kickr bike now so don’t have the bother of chains and cassettes.
That doesn’t work for every brand, eg elite trainers but possibly tacx neither
The resistance is set by a magnet which moves position, so when you power off the magnet stays in that position and the resistance stays on. If you ever start hearing horrible noise from your trainer it’s probably the magnet mechanism that needs regreasing
